What the Tulsa Massacre Destroyed
Organization: The New York Times
Date: May 24, 2021
To commemorate the centennial of the Tulsa race massacre, I co-led the reporting for this important story with Anjali Sighvi. Together with fellow graphics editors, we analyzed century-old archival maps, city directories, census data, newspaper clippings and survivor accounts, to reconstruct the Greenwood neighborhood destroyed in the massacre.
In parallel to the reporting, I collaborated on storyboarding the visual narrative and animated the 3D scenes featuring the close-up of the Greenwood Avenue and Archer Street intersection.
Data collected and created for this story was shared with the public on github.
